Cedric felt horrible once Jonathan had left the room. He was touched by the way Jonathan was taking care of him, and he should have told Jonathan that. Instead, he’d only been able to focus on Archie and what was happening to him.

Jonathan understood, which made everything worse. Cedric wanted him to yell at him for ignoring him, or at the very least to push. Instead, Jonathan was doing everything he could to make Cedric happy, and Cedric wished he could be. He never would without Archie, though. He had to know what had happened to his brother, and he loathed that he had to wait.

He wanted to run back to Archie. He wanted to try to get him out of that place. Instead, he had to wait here for other people to make those decisions.

Having someone to take care of him felt good, but it was also confusing. Or maybe that was the mess of emotions Cedric was feeling. He was happy to have found Jonathan, but he felt guilty about it because he should be focusing on Archie. There was nothing he could do for his brother for now. Even if there was, he knew he wouldn’t be up to it. He was still tired, hungry, and he felt weak. Rick had kept him that way on purpose so he wouldn’t try to escape. That hadn’t done Rick any good, but then, Cedric hadn’t expected to be able to run away.

He hadn’t been planning to, and when Devon had told him to go, he’d obeyed on impulse. He should have thought better of it. If he had, Archie wouldn’t be in the situation he was in right now, but then, neither would Cedric. If Cedric had stayed, both he and his brother would be stuck with Rick. There wouldn’t be an enforcers’ team getting ready to try to help Archie. Cedric wouldn’t have found out when Elroy was planning to attack Gillham. So many things wouldn’t have happened, and Cedric couldn’t find it in himself to regret running away. He was terrified of what Rick was doing to Archie, but he knew that this was their only chance to make it out. Alone, they couldn’t do anything. With an enforcers’ team at their back, though, Archie would be free soon. Cedric had to believe that.

He had to do something. He couldn’t let Jonathan do everything for him, no matter how much he wanted to snuggle in the bed and forget about everything that was happening around him. Instead of doing that, he showered, put on clean clothes, and headed out of the guest room.

He wasn’t surprised Jonathan had shown him to a guest room instead of the master bedroom. He suspected Jonathan wanted him with him, but he would never push for something like that. Last night, he’d even slept on the floor. Cedric had offered to share the bed, but Jonathan had refused. He’d understood that Cedric felt vulnerable, and he’d wanted to make him feel better.
